Telecommunications: An Introduction to Electronic Media
Now in the 1980s the field of study may be broadening even more. The telephone and computer have teamed up and may be on the verge of creating a new round in the information evolution. In a way, this brings broadcasting full circle. Radio can be seen to have its antecedents in the telephone because, at one point, the telephone was seen as a mass medium and the radio as an individual, private medium. In 1877, a song called "The Wondrous Tele-phone" contained the following lyrics: "You stay at home and listen to the lecture in the hall, Or hear the strains of music from a fashionable ball! The original idea for the telephone was that it would deliver words and music to large groups of people.
